Instagram’s “Confirming your age on Instagram” page (read 18 October 2026): “In some regions, you may be required to confirm your age to continue using your account. You may also be required to verify your age to access certain features or to change your birthday on your account.” and “If they attempt to change their birthday from an age under 18 to an age over 18, they may need to confirm their age with a video selfie or an ID check.” Meta’s newsroom post of 5 May 2026: “If we determine an account may be underage, it will be deactivated and the account holder will need to provide proof of age through our age verification process to prevent their account from being deleted.” The first-observed month is from press (UKTN, 7 November 2022: UK users editing their date of birth to 18 or over given the video-selfie option “from Monday”); Meta’s own 13 October 2022 update said it planned to expand the test “to the UK and EU before the end of the year”.

“Once your age has been estimated and shared with us, we will delete the image within 30 days. We don’t share any other information about you with the vendor.”

Quoted from help.instagram.com; checked 18 October 2026. Held by the service. Period as stated: Image deleted within 30 days (Instagram help page).

Notes: Instagram’s video-selfie page names “vendors” rather than Yoti: “If you choose to take a video selfie, we partner with vendors who use technology to estimate your age. After you’ve taken a video selfie, we’ll share an image from that selfie with the vendor. Our vendors’ technology only estimates age. It can’t identify specific people.” Its “Confirming your age” page names Yoti: “We partner with Yoti, a third party age verification service, to confirm people’s ages on Instagram.” Meta’s 5 May 2026 newsroom post names “Yoti’s facial age estimation tools”. Meta’s 23 June 2022 post: “After you take a video selfie, we share the image with Yoti, and nothing else. Yoti’s technology estimates your age based on your facial features and shares that estimate with us. Meta and Yoti then delete the image.” Yoti’s own notice says it deletes the selfie as soon as an estimate is given (see the Yoti page). Instagram’s page: “It can take up to 20 minutes to verify your age.”

Notes: Instagram’s page: “Yoti, a third party age verification service uses a variety of options for people to verify their age on Instagram”, listing “Upload an ID” and “Take a video selfie”. “The ID you choose must include a photo of your face and your birth date.” Passport and driver’s licence are the types listed. Meta’s 23 June 2022 post: “Your ID will be stored securely on our servers and is deleted within 30 days.” Meta’s general page on IDs says storage “depends on what you’re using it for”, with up to 180 days for advertiser or Meta Verified checks and up to one year where fraud or abuse is suspected; the age-verification page carries the 30-day line. “Depending on the laws in your region, you may also be required to get parental approval if we determine you’re under a certain age.”

In-house age inference Meta (in-house)

No published retention period found (checked 18 October 2026).

Notes: Meta’s newsroom post of 5 May 2026 (corrected 31 July 2026): AI analyses “entire profiles for contextual clues — such as birthday celebrations or mentions of school grades” across posts, comments, bios and captions, plus “visual analysis” of photos and videos, which Meta says “is not facial recognition” and “does not create facial fingerprints or identify who is in a photo”. Accounts suspected to be teens “even if they list an adult birthday” are placed in Teen Account settings; Meta’s 21 September 2025 update said this testing expanded to the UK, Canada and Australia “starting today”, and the May 2026 post says Meta “successfully launched this technology on Instagram in the US, Australia, Canada, and the UK”. Meta says it gives people “the option to change their settings” in case of a mistake, and that an account it determines may be under 13 “will be deactivated” until proof of age is provided. No retention statement for the signals used was found.

Meta: “certain advanced features — like visual analysis — are currently available in select countries as we work toward a broader rollout.”

What you will see

What happens
If you change your birthday from under 18 to over 18, or Meta’s systems flag your account as possibly under age, Instagram asks for a video selfie (age estimated by Yoti) or a photo of a passport or driving licence. Meta’s May 2026 post says an account it determines may be under 13 is deactivated until proof of age is given.
How long it takes
Instagram’s page: “It can take up to 20 minutes to verify your age.” An appeal against an under-13 removal “may take up to 30 days”.
If you decline
The birthday change does not go through. Instagram’s pages: an account under review for being under 13 “will be removed” unless an appeal with a valid ID succeeds; Meta’s May 2026 post: a suspected-underage account is deactivated and the holder must “provide proof of age through our age verification process to prevent their account from being deleted.”
